Uplift Mid-MO decided to “treat” Mexico residents on Halloween night at the 2019 Mexico Trunk or Treat. We started early, set up our tent (in high winds, no less) and wrapped it in tarps to try to brave the cold. Every single member of the Uplift Board of Directors was present, as were some of their spouses to help in our efforts. In all, we had 18 individuals from 3 different churches working hard and braving the cold weather, all in the name of Jesus.
In the blessing tent, we offered Hygiene products including lotions, soaps, shampoo, conditioner, and dental care items that were donated by Unilever in Jefferson City and several local dental offices. We had over 110 families come through our tent in two hours. We went through so many cases of product that we had to leave 30 minutes in to the event and go get more. We had winter hats, scarves and gloves for both children and adults, which went very quickly given the brisk fall weather we experienced. It was especially appreciated that some of these hats and scarves were hand made by the “Knit Witts” knitting club from First Presbyterian Church, which added an extra special touch. Every time we would see a child walk in the tent, Uplift volunteers would make sure to put a hat on their head if they needed one. Each family could take a total of five items of their choice from our tent, and were offered prayer as they exited. If they wanted prayer, we stopped what we were doing and prayed with them there on the spot. We had printed materials from Genesis Church and Centennial Baptist Church, which we distributed to those interested in finding a church home.
We had a minivan set up and decorated next to our tent for the more “traditional” trunk or treaters, offering pre-packaged dental care products, as well as LOTS of candy. It was a fun evening for all and a wonderful display of Christ’s love for our community.
